No Kings: Vote Early - What the October 17 Protests Were About
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, the No Kings movement was back in the streets. This time it came with a clear instruction: vote early. Thousands of rallies, marches and block parties took place in all 50 states, two and a half weeks before the November 3 midterm elections. Here is what the day was about, why early voting became the message, and how to keep the momentum going.
What is No Kings?
No Kings is a nationwide, nonviolent protest movement against the concentration of power during Donald Trump's second presidency. Its name sums up the idea: in a democracy, nobody rules like a king. After the first No Kings day in June 2025, people mobilized again in October 2025 and March 2026, each time in hundreds of cities. Groups like Indivisible and the 50501 movement helped coordinate events, while most rallies were organized by local volunteers.
Why "Vote Early"?
The October 2026 edition turned street energy into votes. Organizers argued that a ballot cast early can't be lost to a long line, a closed polling place or a last-minute problem on Election Day. Many rallies ended with directions to the nearest early voting site, or with volunteers helping people check their registration.
In the UK and Europe, sister events ran under the name "No Tyrants: Vote Early", so they wouldn't be confused with anti-monarchy campaigns, and invited American citizens abroad to request their ballots.
Why it matters for antifascists
Antifascism is not only about confronting the far right on the street. It is also about defending the institutions that let ordinary people hold power to account: free elections, a free press, independent courts. Historically, authoritarian movements have taken power when democratic majorities stayed home or stayed divided. Showing up, at a rally and at the ballot box, is one of the simplest ways to say never again.
How to keep the momentum
- Vote early and make a plan for the people around you.
- Volunteer as a poll worker, driver or phone banker in the final days.
- Join a local group: the people you met at the rally are your organizing network.
- Wear the message. A shirt starts conversations in places a sign can't reach.
