Trans Day of Remembrance 2026: How to Honor and Protect Trans Lives

Every year on November 20, people around the world gather for the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) to honor the trans people who lost their lives to violence. In 2026 it falls on a Friday. Here is where the day comes from, why it matters so much this year, and how you can take part.

The history of TDoR

Trans Day of Remembrance was started in 1999 by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, as a vigil for Rita Hester, a Black trans woman murdered in Massachusetts in 1998. What began as a single candlelight vigil is now observed in hundreds of cities. Names are read aloud, candles are lit, and communities come together to grieve and to commit to change.

TDoR is the closing day of Transgender Awareness Week (November 13 to 19), and it is different from the joyful Trans Day of Visibility on March 31.

Why it matters in 2026

This year, trans people, and especially trans young people, have faced a wave of restrictions in schools, sports and healthcare. Just this October, a trans high school student in Georgia was told she could not run for homecoming queen because of her sex assigned at birth. Elsewhere, students and teachers stood up for a trans homecoming queen targeted by online trolls. These stories show both the pressure trans youth face and the power of the people who stand beside them.

How to honor the day

  • Attend a vigil: local LGBTQ+ centers and Pride groups organize events on or around November 20.
  • Listen to trans voices and share their stories, not just their deaths.
  • Support trans-led organizations, mutual aid funds and legal defense groups.
  • Show up locally: school board meetings are where many decisions about trans kids are made.
  • Be visibly supportive, so trans people around you know they are safe with you.

Why trans rights are antifascist

In 1933, one of the first acts of the Nazi regime was to destroy Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin, a place that supported trans people. Attacks on trans people have always been a warning sign. Read more in The Trans Antifa Flag and Pride Was a Protest.
