The Trans Antifa Flag: Meaning and Symbolism

At Pride marches and trans rights demonstrations, one flag has become a familiar sight: the classic antifa logo in light blue, pink and white. This is the trans antifa flag. Here is what it means and where it comes from.

Two symbols in one

The trans antifa flag combines two well-known designs:

The transgender pride flag: five horizontal stripes of light blue, pink and white, designed by Monica Helms in 1999. Blue and pink are traditional colors for boys and girls; white stands for people who are intersex, transitioning or who do not identify with a binary gender. The pattern reads the same whichever way it is flown, a symbol that trans people are always "right side up".

Put together, they say: trans people exist, and we will defend them against fascism.

Why trans rights are an antifascist issue

Fascist movements have always targeted gender-nonconforming people. In 1933, the Nazis destroyed Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin, a place that had supported trans people and pioneered gender-affirming care. We tell this story in Pride Was a Protest.

Today, many far-right movements again campaign against trans people: restricting healthcare, banning drag shows, removing trans people from public life. That is why the trans antifa flag has become so popular. It shows that trans people are not alone, and that the antifascist movement stands with them.

A whole family of pride antifa flags

The trans version is one of several. You will also see the antifa logo in rainbow, lesbian, pansexual, bisexual and non-binary colors. Each one carries the same message: queer liberation and antifascism go hand in hand.
