What Does the Antifa Flag Mean?
You have probably seen it on a t-shirt, a sticker on a lamp post or a flag at a demonstration: two flags waving inside a black circle. It is the antifa flag, and it is one of the most recognisable political symbols in the world. But where does it come from, and what do the colors mean?
Where the antifa logo comes from: Germany, 1932
The logo was created in 1932 for the Antifaschistische Aktion (Antifascist Action), a movement launched in Germany as the Nazi party was gaining ground. The design is credited to two artists from the Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists, Max Gebhard and Max Keilson.
The idea was simple and powerful. In the original version, both flags were red. They stood for the hope that workers from different left-wing parties would set aside their divisions and stand together against fascism. The circle around them read "Antifaschistische Aktion".
That unity never fully happened, and the Nazis took power in 1933. But the symbol survived.
Why one flag is red and one is black
In the 1980s, antifascist groups in West Germany brought the logo back. They changed it in two ways: one flag became black, the color of anarchism, and the flags were flipped to wave in the other direction.
- Red stands for socialist and communist traditions.
- Black stands for anarchist and autonomous movements.
- Together, they say that people with different ideas can still unite against a common threat.
This red and black version is the one most people know today, and it is the design on our Antifa Logo T-Shirt.
Antifa is not one organization
A common misunderstanding is that "antifa" is a single group with leaders and members. It is not. Antifa is short for antifascist, and the flag is a shared symbol used by many independent groups, collectives and individuals around the world. Wearing it simply says one thing: you oppose fascism, racism and bigotry.
The flag in pride colors
Over the last decade, queer communities have adopted the logo in their own colors. You will now see the antifa flag in rainbow, trans, lesbian and pansexual pride colors at Pride marches everywhere. It is a reminder that fascism has always targeted LGBTQ+ people, and that queer liberation and antifascism go hand in hand. Discover our pride antifa collection.

- No pasarán: "they shall not pass", the rallying cry of the defenders of Madrid during the Spanish Civil War.
- The broken swastika: a simple anti-Nazi sign used on posters and stickers since the 1930s.
